From the Alps to the Red Sea / Marek Heman

Marek Herman was born 1927 in Lvov, Poland, to a poor Jewish family. During the German occupation, he escaped from the ghetto and reached a camp manned by Italian troops, and joined them using forged papers. When the Italians were demobilized and returned home, Herman went with them. Following the ousting of Mussolini in July 1943, he was sent by the Germans to Auschwitz, but jumped off the train and joined the Italian resistance. After the liberation, he returned to Poland to look for his family, joined the Dror movement and took part in the "Bricha" operation. In 1948 he arrived in Israel and took part in Israel's War of Independence. After the war, he became a founding member of Kibbutz Lohamei HaGhetaot
