Under assumed identity / yitzhak sternberg

Yitzhak Sternberg was born in 1937 in Lvov (now Ukraine), to an educated Jewish family. He was fourteen years old when the German army invaded the USSR. After his parents were killed in an Aktion, he was forced to survive all by himself, using assumed identities. When the war ended, Sternberg joined the "Dror" youth movement, and was sent to Germany to facilitate the immigration of Holocaust survivors to Mandate Palestine. He finally reached the recently established State of Israel in June 1948, and took part in his new country's war of independence as a soldier in the Harel Brigade of the newly formed Israel Defense Forces. In 1949, he was among the founders of Kibbutz Lohamei HaGhetaot.
