The past year saw much activity among the Friends of the Ghetto Fighters’ House Museum around the world. Beth Dotan, Director of the International Department, was in charge of resource development for the Ghetto Fighters’ House Museum, and she invested great effort in further developing the Friends association. Recently she handed over her role in resource development to Gavriel Hanssen.
Israel Friends of GFH - In February of this year, a Friends forum of businessmen took place in Tel Aviv thanks to the generous support of Yehudit and Henry Taic. During the forum, the participants learned about the museum's activities and discussed future plans.
American Friends of GFH — Thanks to a generous contribution from Raya Strauss Bendror, to enlisted help of the professional team, and to the abundant energy of President Amy Miller of the American Friends of the Ghetto Fighters’ House Museum — The AFGFHM held three launch evenings in November of last year marking the association’s renewal of activity. A new film about the Ghetto Fighters’ House Museum, produced especially for the occasion and funded by contributions, was presented at the events. Dr. Anat Livne, director of the Ghetto Fighters’ House Museum, and Ido Aharoni, Consul General of Israel in New York, saluted the new and veteran friends. The events brought us new guests who arrived to participate for the first time in Holocaust Day observances with us.
French Friends of GFH continues extensive activity in distributing varied learning materials of high quality to schools throughout France. The organization, with its dedicated staff — Béatrice Rosenberg, the President, Ada Tuchbant the Vice President, and Dr. Galith Touati, the Director, along with other participants — has been supporting the Ghetto Fighters’ House Museum for many years now, principally with development initiatives for Yad LaYeled (the children’s memorial museum) and for the archives. This year the association’s President and Chair attended the anniversary observances together with a group of friends both new and old.
Canadian Friends of GFH has emerged from many years of dormancy. Ralph Folman of Toronto (a nephew of Havka Folman-Raban, z"l) has taken upon himself the duties of association president; Ms. Mindy Spiegel of Montreal (the daughter of Boruch and Chaike Spiegel) has stepped forward to help, and together they are intent on nurturing the association. A modest initial event for friends was held in October of last year, and it is hoped that as the association obtains proper legal standing, many friends will join. Ralph Folman honored us with his presence at the Holocaust Memorial Day; and Mindy Spiegel, with her husband Prof. Eugene Orenstein, came to the assembly, where Mindy lit a torch in the name of her parents, z"l.
Dutch Friends of GFH continues to support the Ghetto Fighters’ House Museum. Currently its contributions are sustaining the effort to set up a new screening room next to the Netherlands exhibit.
British Friends of GFH is taking its first steps toward reassuming its former stature.
