From the Desk of the General Director

Last month we launched the events marking the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising with a special reception for President Shimon Peres and the last surviving Holocaust fighters. In this gathering, the President met the fighters and their families, heard their testimonies, and expressed his profound appreciation on behalf of us all for their extraordinary actions and contribution to the national legacy.

New  Appointment:  Mr. Ophir Paz-Pines is new Chair of Governing Council

The Ghetto Fighters' House welcomes Mr. Ophir Paz-Pines, former government minister and Knesset member, who is the incoming Chair of the Governing Council. We wish him a successful term of office. We would like to express our gratitude to Mr. Eli Gonen, the outgoing Chair of the Governing Council of Ghetto Fighters’ House, who served with deep dedication and commitment for four and a half years. We sincerely thank him for the significant role he played in the renewal of Ghetto Fighters’ House.  

In Honor of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day

 Havka Foleman-Raban Meets with Students from Reggio Emilia


ISTORECO (the Institute for the History of the Resistance and Contemporary Society in the Reggio Di Emilia Region) is an association that was founded in 1965 in Reggio Emilia, which is located in northern Italy. Every year students take a "Memory Journey". Part of the students' preparation for this journey is meeting with two Holocaust survivors – one who was deported and the other a resistance fighter. This year the students met Ernst Grube, who was deported to Terezin and Havka Folman Raban, who served as a courier during World War II and is one of the founders of the Ghetto Fighters' Kibbutz.  Read more>>

Abba Kovner - Leader, Poet and Fighter

“For me, as a member of Hashomer Hatzair, today’s event is an encore, a great encore that marks a beginning.” This is how Abba Kovner described his feelings in a speech at the founding conference of the Mapam Party in Tel Aviv. It was late January 1948, two months after the UN had passed the partition plan resolution on November 29th and one week after 35 fighters had been killed in the campaign to liberate Gush Etzion under siege. Archival Items Exhibited in Paris Return to GFH

Unique items lent for exhibition to the Mémorial de la Shoah in Paris were returned to the archive of Ghetto Fighters’ House. As part of GFH’s international collaborative activity, a representative from this Paris museum came to Israel a year ago to examine the materials available here for an exhibit about the fate of Jewish children during the Holocaust. The items sent by Ghetto Fighters’ House attracted considerable attention and were even the subject of study days and gatherings held at the Mémorial de la Shoah.  Read more>>

From the Education Department: New Interactive Program

In preparation for the events commemorating 70 years to the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, the Ghetto Fighters’ House is creating an interactive tablet application for use by high school students and soldiers who visit the Museum. This activity will become part of the study days and tours for students and soldiers to help enrich and deepen their understanding of the ghetto fighters through innovative learning techniques.  Read more>>

From the International Department


Every day at the Ghetto Fighters’ House presents new discoveries and interesting visitors. In early January, honored guests Dede Baba Mondi from Albania and his colleague and translator Arben (Benny) Sulejmani spent a number of hours at the museum.  The Dede Baba Mondi was in Israel to attend a wedding with Israeli friends who accompanied him to the museum. The European Jewish Congress displayed panels from an exhibit based on educational materials from the Ghetto Fighters’ House during the annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day at the European Parliament during the week of January 21st in Brussels. Read more>>

Since 2002, the Ghetto Fighters’ House has conducted an annual program for Jewish educators from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) as part of a joint initiative together with the Jewish Agency and Yad Vashem. Conceptualized by the late Pinchas Agmon, founding director of the Russian Department at the Ghetto Fighters’ House, the seminar aims to prepare teachers for educating Jewish youth throughout the former Soviet Union.  Read more>>

In early January, 250 youth movement counselors from Buenos Aires, Argentina visited the Ghetto Fighters' House.  The young counselors represented movements such as "Maccabi", and "Hebraica" that chose to conclude their visit to Israel with an educational seminar at the museum.  Read more>>

From Yad Layeled:  Revival of the Play "Aunt Lily's Doll"


Yad LaYeled is staging a revival of “Aunt Lily’s Doll”, written 17 years ago by Shlomit Dagan-Deri based on a story by Irina Liebmann. The new production was revised and re-staged by actress Michal Dadonn. The play focuses on a doll, which allows for a connection between Ronnie, a girl representing the third generation, and Lily, a Holocaust survivor. The doll also fills an empty space in Lily’s heart.  Read more>>

The Six International Conference  on Women and the Holocaust

The Sixth International Conference on Women and the Holocaust:  "Her Story": Transference methods of women's biographies and autobiographies from the Holocaust will focus on personal women's life stories from gendered perspectives.
